Hello there!

My name is Angela Zhang [张安琪].

I am a driven, bilingual multimedia journalist specializing in video storytelling that unveils the human impact of geopolitics and policy.

I’m currently working on ABC7 Chicago’s Assignment Desk as a Desk/Production Assistant and Field Producer, where I cover breaking Chicago news. Previously, I worked with ABC7 Chicago’s Investigative Team, Foreign Policy Podcasts, MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show/Alex Wagner Tonight and Midstory Media ThinkHub. I’ve reported on national security and immigration in Washington, D.C. as a Medill News Service correspondent, and have covered ethnic communities in Beijing with China Documentary International Media, Co.

EXPERIENCE

I directed and produced an award-winning short documentary on an American mother of five fighting to reunite with her husband, a Mexican national who can’t permanently stay in the U.S. due to a decades-old immigration law; recognized by SPJ and AAJA, this piece reached national legislators, and saw impact through President Biden subsequently instating an executive order to help mixed-status families.

I’ve also co-produced a short documentary investigating the police abuse Chicago sex workers face, and their fight to make Illinois the first state to decriminalize the industry. This short premiered at the 2026 Oscar-qualifying American Documentary Film Festival in Palm Springs.

For Foreign Policy, I was the sole intern in recent history to have co-produced a season of the limited podcast series, Everyday Ambassador, on the importance of practicing diplomacy.

I have delivered on-air reports for the Northwestern News Network (NNN) as an anchor, and have reported on Chicago culture and politics as Assignment Editor and reporter. My investigative work on Chicago’s museums withholding Native American human remains for NNN has nominated me for a College Emmy.

MY WORK

I graduated from Northwestern University in June 2025 with a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism and Political Science. I was the annual recipient of the Mateja Memorial Scholarship, awarded to one promising student studying journalism. I was chosen to given closing remarks at my school’s convocation.

EDUCATION

Through my journalism, I want to inspire cross-cultural understanding by exploring not just what people are experiencing, but why — and why, at times, they’re calling for change and justice. I craft stories that blend emotionally powerful interviews with broader, nuanced narratives, an approach I strive to bring to my interest in global affairs and U.S.-China relations.

To me, being a multimedia journalist means not just mastering the multifaceted skills I have, but also wearing multiple hats with the same empathy. Whether that’s capturing tender moments with the camera while connecting with audiences in front of it, or writing for both ear and eye, I aim to bring humanity to every one of my stories.
